Logic, Sequence, and Synchronization in Web Site Usability
I’ve been through a lot of weddings with bride and groom using multimedia presentation instead of the traditional backdrop on their wedding reception venue. It’s funny how some of them have captions and music that just don’t go with the visuals. Some multimedia presentations online have the same glitches. It’s hard to pinpoint whether it’s the ordinary lack of artistry or technical error or simply due to complete disregard on its developer.
Now there’s a reason why these multimedia elements like movies and flash animations or vlogs have to be synchronized with their audio and captions or subtitles. Some users with visual deficiencies may be in need of them not just as art elements but more as aids for comprehension. If there are equivalent alternatives to these multimedia elements which are meant for users who have disabilities, they must be synchronized. In other words when you watch an American vlog with captions and the audio doesn’t match that of the video, it confuses you and makes you think the person talking uses a foreign language other than English. So for the benefit of those who have reading and learning deficiencies, synchronize any of your videos and animations. Mind you, if it isn’t that good for normal users, it’s even harder for those with disabilities.
As a site developer or designer, I believe that when the site’s information is organized, there’s no need to come up with style sheets. For those who may not know it, style sheets are necessary for controlling web site layout and appearance. They usually hamper assistive devices from functioning, such as reading and portraying site information.
Now you know how we should lessen the use of style sheets. There’s always a way to make data logically organized without the use of a style sheet.
